Four ways to play

Play the computer

Five levels, from beginners to seasoned players. Sign in with Google and your games against the computer earn points on the leaderboard.

Play a friend

Create an invite link and send it by WhatsApp, Messenger or email; your friend opens it, taps one button and the game starts, no account needed. Sitting side by side? Choose “Two players, one device”.

Arena

Wait on the arena for a player of your level to challenge you, or take on the computer that is always waiting there.

Correspondence

1, 3 or 7 days per move, play whenever you have time; you get a notification on your phone or by email when it is your turn.

Watch live, replay, analyze

During a game, the “Copy live link” button gives you a link anyone can open to watch the game as it happens, each move appearing the moment it is played. When the game ends, the same link becomes a replay. “Analyze game” has the engine grade every move (best, good, inaccuracy, blunder) and draw an arrow to the better move; the engine runs right in your browser.

Example: a high school chess tournament

Picture a high school running a chess tournament for grades 10 and 11, with a few hundred students signed up.

  1. Qualifiers: played during breaks, from home

The organizers just pair players and post the pairings to the group chat. For each pair, one student opens Chess › Play a friend, types a name, taps “Create invite link” and sends the link to the opponent; nobody has to create an account. “Copy live link” gives a link so friends and teachers can follow along. When the game is over, that link is the score sheet: both names, the result and every move, open for anyone to check. If breaks are too short, choose 1 day per move: each student moves when free and gets notified when it is their turn.

  2. The final

The two finalists can sit in different rooms or play from home; draw lots for white, then set it under “Who moves first” when creating the link. Send the live link to both grades and put it on the big screen in the hall: we tested 300 people watching one game, and each move reached the last viewer in under half a second. Afterwards, the whole school can press “Analyze game” to see which move turned the game.

Puzzles and your own positions

Every day there is a new puzzle, mate in 2 to 4 for xiangqi and chess: easy early in the week, harder toward the weekend.

Anyone can set up a position: an endgame from a book, a moment from the game you just played, or an idea of your own. Then play it three ways: against the computer to solve it yourself, both sides on one device to try out lines, or, more fun, tap “Invite a friend to play this” and send the link to a friend: you decide who takes which side and play each other from exactly that position. Paste a position link into WhatsApp or Facebook and the preview shows that very position.

Embed it on your website

Schools, clubs and blogs can put a board on their own pages with the embed code: play the computer or two players on one device, and the embedded board has no ads.

Play anywhere

MateMoves works on phones, tablets and computers, with light and dark themes and 12 languages. The site is free; ads stay outside the board and never appear in a game or in the embed.
